FIRST BANK YOUTH EXCEL SERIES
First Bank of Nigeria Limited has commenced a programme titled, ‘First Bank Youth Excel Series’ designed to empower youths.
The Group Managing Director, First Bank, Mr. Bisi Onasanya, said during the inauguration of the programmeat the University of Lagos on Tuesday that the need to empower youths, build entrepreneurial spirit and tackle some of the challenges faced by youths in their pursuit of good education, research, development, motivated the bank to develop the series.
Onasanya, who was represented by the Group Head, Retail Banking, First Bank, Mr. Tunde Owolabi, said, “We believe that this is the time to intensify the preparation of Nigerian youths with the diverse skills to take your rightful places as the leaders of tomorrow and indeed the future of our great country.
“That is why, for this maiden edition of the series, we carefully searched for a keynote speaker whose life story and achievements will resonate with you as well as call you to action.”
The event, which is aimed to inspire, motivate and encourage the youths, in spite of limitations and challenges, featured renowned motivational speaker and author of the bestselling book, ‘A setback is a setup for comeback’, Mr. Willie Jolley.
Onasanya added that the initiative was essential, especially as the bank was focused on the development of human capital, within and outside the institution.
“At First Bank, our core values are woven around ‘passion, partnership, and people,’ and this is the reason we would continuously engage in value-adding partnerships for the benefits of our customers, staff and the entire populace,” he said.

Rccg pastor dies after leading prayer
When Pastor Solomon Komolafe of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Winners Assembly, Ibadan, OyoState, set out for church on February4, 2013, he was hale and hearty.
But his parish was thrown into chaos moments later when Komolafe slumped after leading the congregation in a prayer session and died right on the altar. The Redeemed family is also in shock!
Pastor Komolafe died nine months after one of his daughters lost her life in an auto crash around May 2012. One of the children of the deceased, Funsho, told Punch that Komolafe’s death was shocking and unbelievable. He said with his father’s death, it had become doublecalamity for the family.
Funsho said the 69-year-old Pastor did not have any terminal ailment. He stressed that he and other members of the family had yet to come to terms with the sad incident.
“My father, Pastor Komolafe, popularly known as Jack Solo, slumped right on the altar. The incident was immediately after he led the congregation in a prayer session. He slumped and died on thespot,” he said.
Funsho eulogised his father’s virtues, saying he was a disciplinarian, industrious, compassionate, philanthropic, pious, accommodating and exemplary leader.
Pastor Komolafe, an indigene of Ikere Ekiti, Ekiti State, was survived by his wife, Adewunmi and three children: Oluwafunsho, Abiodun andOluwaseyi

Osun State governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, said last week that his administration plans to introduce the study of Ifa as one of the subjects in the state's secondary school. The schools' computer tablet already have application for Ifa studies. If they do this, won't Ogun, Obatala, Sango worshippers etc also clamour for the introduction of their own studies? Should traditional studies be introduced in schools? Please share your thoughts.
But think about it, reading incantations could actually be fun!...or not.

I WILL NOT RESIGN,JONATHAN TELLS BOKO HARAM.But President Goodluck Jonathan has faulted the condition given by the Boko Haram that he should embrace the Islamic faith and become its ardent member or resign from office, saying that the sect's demands were blackmail and rude intimidation.
Speaking to LEADERSHIP through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the president said he would not resign as president as far as he was in power based on the mandate givento him by Nigerians in the 2011 presidential poll.
Abati said it was laughable for any group in the country to hand down such a condition to a president whowas elected by both Muslims and Christians in last year's presidential poll even when it was not in contest that he was a Christian.
The presidential spokesman said,"When Nigerians voted overwhelmingly for President Jonathan in the 2011 general election, they knew they were voting for a Christian. He continues to enjoy the goodwill and support of the good people of Nigeria. As president, Dr. Jonathan is the leaderof both Muslims and Christians; in fact he is the leader of persons of all faiths.
"So, it amounts to sheer blackmail for any individual or group to ask the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to convert to Islam. The president cannot be intimidated by any group or individual. The President will never resign. He has the mandate of Nigerians to serve his motherland and nobody should imagine that hewill succumb to blackmail."

Is personalized medicine a myth?
"Hello," responds an
automated voice. "There is a 97% likelihood that you will have a cardiac
event within the next 12 hours. Please proceed to a hospital as soon as
possible."
According to experts like
Eric Topol, director and chief academic officer at Scripps
Translational Science Institute, technology like this -- and a slew of
other medical wonders -- isn't so far-fetched. In fact, some of it is
already here.
There are now more cell
phones in the world than there are toilets and toothbrushes, Topol said.
And these phones, which have become our constant companions and virtual
extensions of our bodies, are increasingly being used to track our
physiology from moment to moment.
The intersection of
technology, science, medicine and design has led to an explosion of apps
for monitoring blood pressure, glucose levels and heart rate and
measuring how well you sleep, whether you're stressed or relaxed and
whether you're eating healthy. We have been able to harness the existing
digital infrastructure to get personalized health data we did not have
access to before.
Combine wireless sensors
with the study of genes, or genomics, imaging and a proliferation of
health-focused social networks, and you have a convergence capable of
bringing about the "creative destruction" of medicine.
That's the term Topol
uses in his 2012 book, "The Creative Destruction of Medicine: How the
Digital Revolution Will Create Better Health Care," to refer to the
transformation that accompanies radical innovation.
This disruption, said Topol, will be characterized by the personalization of drugs, devices, screening tests and treatments.
Personalized medicine
can deliver better information to help patients make an individual
choice about the risks and rewards of a particular course of treatment:
which medicines will work for him or her, which drugs may pose a danger
and whether doses may need to be adjusted. Personalized medicine can
also help profile someone's potential risk for contracting a disease
like cancer or diabetes.
But not everyone agrees with Topol.
"Personalized medicine
is a myth. It's hyperbolic," argued Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, vice provost
for global initiatives and chairman of the Department of Medical Ethics
and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania.
Emanuel spoke with Topol
and Margaret Hamburg, commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration,
on a panel about personalized medicine at the Aspen Ideas Festival this month.
According to Emanuel,
tailoring medical treatments to individual characteristics of each
patient is both overly optimistic and cost-prohibitive. He likened it to
buying a custom-made suit versus one off the rack.
But in an interview
after Aspen Ideas, Topol disputed that, saying that nowhere is the
promise of personalized medicine as hopeful or exciting as in cancer
research.
"We are at a pivot point when it comes to cancer," Topol observed. "We may not have had the tools before, but we do now."
Mapping the human
genome, which initially took more than a decade and roughly $3 billion,
can now be performed in a little more than an hour to the tune of $900.
Several cancer centers like MD Anderson in Texas and Sloan Kettering in
New York have begun identifying the genetic fingerprints of tumors and
targeting specific treatments.
The first step is to
sequence the patient's DNA in order to uncover the cancer-causing
mutation. Then, instead of administering a one-size-fits-all drug,
doctors would use one that addresses the specific mutation.
"It's a more intelligent, precise way," Topol said.
The patient's response
to treatment would also be monitored. "Instead of putting them through
radiation, PET scans and CT scans, which are very expensive and
potentially harmful, we are now looking at noninvasive tests that do the
same job," Topol said.
One example, he said, is
a promising test that uses microchip technology to sift through blood
in search of circulating tumor cells, which come from solid tumors and
roam through the blood.
"Both the initial
treatment that addresses the root cause and the follow-up can be
revamped," Topol said. "And it's not that expensive. In fact, it's far
cheaper."
In addition to what he
felt would be explosive costs, Emanuel also argued against personalized
medicine by observing that behavioral and lifestyle changes like diet,
smoking and exercise, which account for 40% to 60% of all disease, are
far likelier to have an impact on longevity and health-care
affordability than genetics and thus should be the center of focus.
Topol said that none of
what we talk about in personalized medicine is meant to supplant efforts
to improve people's diets, lifestyles and physical activity.
But, to use one lifestyle example, there are different explanations for obesity beyond "you are eating too much."
That approach doesn't
take into account an individual's biological disposition. Some people
are obese not because they eat too much but because they have a genetic
structural variation. Others may have an issue related to their
individual microbiomes: the totality of microbes, their genomes and the
collective environmental reaction in the gut.
Researchers have linked
certain microbiomes to obesity, which then opens the door to
individualized probiotic and other therapies. "That's the whole idea
behind individualized treatment and prevention," Topol said.
The bottom line is that
when it comes to technology's disruption of medicine, Topol believes the
genie is already out of the bottle. Some of the best cancer centers are
on this path. They are, however, treating a minority of the patients
out there.
There are a host of
barriers to realizing the promise of personalized medicine -- insurance
reimbursement, privacy and regulatory issues, information and
aggregation issues, among others -- but perhaps none so pernicious as
resistance.
"The problem is that it takes physicians so long to accept a radical change. And the lag is unacceptable," Topol said.
Resist as some might, the power of one's own data is the future of medicine.
"It is only a matter of when," Topol said.

ROMNEY:US AS A MORAL DUTY TO BLOCK IRAN NUCLEAR WEAPONS
US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has said his country has a "moral imperative" to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Mr Romney, speaking during a visit to Jerusalem, said Iran was the most destabilising country in the world.
He said the US recognised Israel's right to defend itself and that it wasright for the US to stand with Israel.
Mr Romney also referred to Jerusalem as Israel's "capital" - senior Palestinian officials said this was "unacceptable".
In his speech in front of Jerusalem's Old City, Mr Romney said Iran's leading ayatollahs were "testing our moral defences".
"They want to know who will object and who will look the other way. We will not look away nor willour country ever look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."
He said Iran was "the most destabilising nation in the world" and that the US had "a solemn duty and a moral imperative to deny Iran's leaders the means to follow through on their malevolent intentions".
'All measures'
Earlier, one of Mr Romney's top advisers, Dan Senor, had said the presidential candidate would respect any decision by Israel to usemilitary force against Iran.
US President Barack Obama has focused on using sanctions to contain Iran's nuclear ambitions.
It may not convert any new voters but this election is all about firing up likely supporters, exciting them and making sure they turn out to vote”

NIGERIA POLITICIAN ARE INSANE AND DREAM KILLER SAYS RICHARD BRANSON
The rich international businessman, Richard Branson, has lambasted the crop of leaders we have in Nigeria for their high level greed which, according to him, is killing big brands wishing to do business with the government of the country, for the growth of Nigeria’s economy.
Below is the revelations by Mr.Branson on his experience in Nigeria…
The chairman of Virgin Atlantic said: “…we have virgin’s ill-fated footsteps by setting up a new airline in Africa in conjunction with Nigerian government…the details of the doomed attempts to crack the Nigerianmarket in the 2000s is better imagined…we put …together a very good airline-the first airline in West Africa that was ever IOSA/IATA operational safety audit accredited but unfortunately it got tied down to the politics of the country…we led the airlines for 11 years…
“ We fought daily battle against government agents who wanted to daily make fortune from us, politicians who saw the government 49% as a meal to seek for allkinds of favour…watchdogs (regulatory body) that didn’t know what to do andpersistently asking for bribes at any point…Nigeria people are generally nice but the politicians are very insane…that may be irony because the people make up the politicians …
“ But those politicians are selfish…we did make N3billion for the federal government of Nigeria during the joint venture…realising that the government didn’t bring nothing to the table/partnership except dubious debts by the previous carrier, Nigeria Airways…The joint venture should have been the biggest African carrier by now if the partnership was allowed to grow, but the politicians KILLED it…Nigeriais a country we SHALL NEVERconsider to doing business again.. ”
CHICKS-FIL A'S GAY MARRIAGE BEEF
CHICKS-FIL-A'S GAY MARRIAGE BEEF
The inventors of the chicken sandwich, Chick-Fil-A, are in hot water these days following comments made by their president, Dan Cathy, who said the company was "guilty as charged" in its stance against gaymarriage.
The comments sparked a politicalfirestorm across the country, but a closer inspection of Chick-fil-A's roots and its political activities reveal it has made no secret of itsconservative values.
The controversy began when Cathy elaborated on his "guilty ascharged" comment in an interview on the Atlanta radio program The Ken Coleman show.
"I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage."
First the Jim Henson Co., which provided Muppets toys for Chick-fil-A kids meals, pulled its toys and its partnership with the restaurant. Then the mayors of Boston and Chicago expressed opposition to new Chick-fil-A outlets opening in their cities.
FOUNDING FATHERS YOU DIDNT BUILD THAT
FOUNDING FATHERS YOU DIDN'T BUILD THAT
When President Obama said at a rally earlier month that "if you'vebeen successful, you didn't get there on your own … if you've got a business, you didn't build that," he started a political firestorm, and an opposing "I built that" campaign from Mitt Romney. But it turns out Obama didn't build that argument from scratch, either. And his commentsseem to be closer to the foundingfathers' principles than opponents might like to believe.
As noticed by Reddit , Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine, two men who literally built the country, expressed similar sentiments in the 1700s. And, reading the passages suggests that they wouldn't take all the credit for founding the country, either.
In a Christmas Day letter to Robert Morris in 1783, Franklin wrote that "the remissness of ourpeople in paying taxes is highly blameable," and that "all property…seems to me to be the creature of public convention."
He continues:
"All the Property that is necessaryto a man, for the conservation of the individual and the propagation of the species, is his natural right, which none can justly deprive him of: But all property superfluous to such purposes is the property of the publick, who, by their laws, have created it, and who may therefore by other laws dispose of it, whenever the welfare of thepublick shall demand such disposition. He that does not like civil society on these terms, let him retire and live among savages."
Paine, in 1795's Agrarian Justice , puts it even more bluntly:"Personal property is the effect ofsociety; and it is as impossible foran individual to acquire personal property without the aid of society, as it is for him to make land originally."
"Separate an individual from society, and give him an island ora continent to possess, and he cannot acquire personal property. He cannot be rich," he writes.
Obama, Franklin, and Paine say it's OK to become rich through hard work—just don't trample on the people who helped make it happen.

Set to kick off at 9 p.m. local time, opening ceremonies promise to be a celebration of all things British, while featuring a parade of competitors from hundreds of countries, as well as decidedly odd-looking games mascots and staff garb.
Lucky for the millions of spectators who will be tuning into the see the world's greatest athletes, this isn't the British capital's first time around the block when it comes to hosting a major international sporting event. The city has played host twice before for the summer in games in 1908 and again in 1948

No matter the roller coaster ride gas prices take us on, or perhaps due to it, consumers are steadily purchasing hybrid and electric vehicles. Highlights of the last year in electric and hybrid cars include a 164% increase in June 2012 sales, compared to June 2011. Folks at Kelley Blue Book expect hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) sales to slow a bit — but not nosedive — as gas prices decline.
Movers and shakers in the alternative-energy car category include Lexus and Chevrolet. The Blue Book Market Report highlights a 500% increase in sales of the Lexus CT200h year-over-year. The Chevy Volt had a 200% year-over-year increase in sales. The Volt may be more popular because of its longer driving range — 379 miles; however, the Volt is not entirely electric, a sticking point for some of the EV hardliners.
Toyota had a big year with its Prius,as well. Alec Gutierrez, senior market analyst of automotive insights for Kelley Blue Book, said Prius sales surged “more than 300 percent from June of last year. The Prius has been in high demand since the introduction of the subcompact Prius c and wagon-esque Prius v. Sales numbers for thePrius look especially strong due to the inventory shortages that plagued Toyota at this time last year.”
Not all EVs and hybrids had stellar years, though. The Blue Book reported the Honda CR-Z, Honda Insight, and Nissan Leaf had a bummer of a year, failing to reach the same figures from 2011.

Fresh from clinching their veryfirst Olympic basketball berth in the just recently concluded FIBA qualifying tournament, Nigeria looks to settle their score against Africa rival Tunisia in the opening day of the men’s basketball tournament in the 2012 London Olympics.
Backed up with NBA talents like Ike Diagu and Al-Farouq Aminu, the Nigerian salvaged the final Olympic berth after thwarting the heavy favored Dominican Republic 88-73.
Meanwhile, Tunisia captured an automatic berth in the London Games after winning the gold medal in last year’s 2011 FIBA Africa championship.
If we would only consider talent, Nigeria has the roster that could compete against tough teams from Europe andSouth America.
However, Tunisia proved fromtime-to-time again that they can thrive against talented teams as they showed last year in their semifinal win against Nigeria and former African hoops powerhouse Angola.
The Nigeria-Tunisia will be a physical game as emotions run high between the two African rivals. In the end, Nigeria will salvage their first and perhaps only victory in Group B, where Lithuania, Argentina, France, and the United States are also pitted.
