US suspects Syria of chemical attack
US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has said American intelligence believes “to some degree of varying confidence” that Syria has used chemical weapons.
During a visit to the United Arab Emirates, he said it was suspected that sarin gas had been used against rebels.
Mr Hagel said the use was “small scale” and did not specify where or when.
The White House has warned chemical weapons use would be a“red line” for possible intervention, but said the intelligence does not represent proof.
Mr Hagel, speaking to reporters in Abu Dhabi, said the White House had informed two senators by letter that, within the past day, “our intelligence community does assess, with varying degrees of confidence, that the Syrian regimehas used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically, the chemical agent sarin”.
“It violates every convention of warfare,” the Pentagon chief said.

Imoukhuede may succeed Sanusi as next CBN governor
AS the race on who succeeds the incumbent Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Lamido Sanusi in June next year gets tougher, there are strong indications that the Presidency and key cabinet members of the administration mayhave settled for the Group ManagingDirector of Access Bank, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede.
Since Sanusi confirmed in March this year that he will not seek second term, various individuals have been jostling for the plum job.
Apart from Imoukhuede, Bauchi State Governor, Isa Yuguda; Chairman of Stanbic IBTC Bank, Atedo Peterside and a renowned economist and Chief Executive Officer, Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Mr Bismarck Rewane, among others, were speculated as frontline contestants.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that apart from the Coordinating Ministerof the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala and Sanusi, President Goodluck Jonathan has given his fullsupport to the Access Bank boss to clinch the job.
A source close to Imoukhuede confirmed to Nigerian Tribune that the coordinating Minister of the Economy and Mallam Sanusi actuallysold the candidature of the Access Bank boss to President Jonathan.
With this development, President Jonathan may have dumped his kinsman, Peterside. The Stanbic IBTCChairman was also said to rely heavily on Sanusi, a fellow Kings College old boy.
Industry watchers are not surprised at the present scenario as Imoukhuede has been the unofficial personal assistant to the incumbent CBN Governor. Apart from defendingSanusi’s policy at any given forum, he is said to have been understudying him in the last two years.
Imoukhuede who is a member of the Nigeria Economic Management Team (NEMT) is also believed to be amember of the ‘kitchen cabinet’ of President Jonathan which has seen him handling many committees including that of the fuel subsidy.
A financial analyst who pleaded anonymity told Nigerian Tribune that the industry is already expecting Imoukhuede to succeed Sanusi as the next CBN Governor.
According to him, over time, Sanusi has seen Imoukhuede as somebody he can trust and rely on, stressing that the duo are always together at every event.
“We will not be surprised. Imoukhuede is a brilliant young man. He knows what he wants and will always go for it. Apart from Sanusi, he is close to his colleagues and even the Presidency. I wish him good luck,” he said

More judges may go as NJC set for meeting.
The meeting of the National Judicial Council (NJC) slated for today and tomorrow would be stormy, a highly-placed system source disclosed last night, while indicatingthat more indicted judges might be shown the way out by the time the two-day meeting ends.
Describing the system as already charged, the source noted that one contentious issue at the meeting is the alleged abuse of medical allowance by justices of the Supreme Court, which exclusive reportage by the Nigerian Tribune had caused commotion in the system.
The council chairman and Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, returned on Su nday night from South Africa, preparatory to today’s meeting.
The likely consideration of probe reports indicting some high-profile judges is also an issue the source identified as a “hot spot” at today’s meeting.
The alleged high-handedness of Mukhtar in relating with her brother justices of the apex court, which is already causing rumpus in the system, may also see a bit of anti-Mukhtar sentiments in the consideration of issues at the meeting, especially the ongoing anti-corruption crusade, the source further revealed.
A certain head of court, who is reportedly under probe for alleged induced judgements, is a member ofthe council and a major critic of Mukhtar’s anti-corruption crusade which he openly criticized.
It was learnt that the probe report returned on his alleged corrupt practices was damning.
Those reportedly opposed to the alleged high-handedness of Mukhtar, may not allow for express application of capital sanction for the indicted judges, with a source disclosing that “many are not to comfortable that almost all the petitions leading to the sacking of judges were mainly from senior lawyers.”
The said head of court was also reportedly fingered in an alleged confession of a female judge in a controversial ruling, which had beentraced to “alleged inducement.”

He said that the accused stole two pants, one bra and a cash sum of N10,000 belonging to MrsGift Bassey.
"The accused, a pastor of All Nations Evangelical Church, Oshodi, was invited to a programme at the headquarters of the church, which was the complainant's church.
The complainant and her husband accommodated him (pastor) in their house for three nights to conduct a special prayer session related to her husband's business," he said.
Olatunde said that after the accused had left their house, the complaint discovered that two of her pants, (her only black and white pants), one black brassier and the sum of N10,000 were missing.
"In the process of finding, it was discovered that the said underwear were taken by the accused without the complainant's consent.
At first, the accused denied taking those underwears but later confessed that he actually took them. He said that he wanted to use them to pray for her, but denied taking the money," the prosecutor said.
Olatunde said that after the underwear was recovered from the accused, he had been sending series of threat text messages to the complainant.
"The accused always send her text messages, threatening to eliminate her on or before August ending," he said.
Olatunde said that the offences committed contravened Sections 166 and 285 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

His Experience With Ritualists/kidnappers At Lekki This Morning
I'll be as brief as possible. To tell you that kidnappers & ritualists exist & are on rampage is an understatement. What you need to be aware of is that they adopt different strategies to capture their victims. I'm going to share with you one approach so as not to become a prey.
I was at Law School busstop at about 6.30am today when I saw a cab & told the driver my destination. He told me to board.I noticed that there was a 'passenger' beside him & another one at the back. So I sat at the back.
Within 30 seconds of our journey, the young man beside me offered the driver #100 as transport fare. Immediately, the driver started shouting. The dialogue ensued between both of them:
Driver: How dare you offer me a hundred naira as transport fare? Aren't you the one that put that bag in the trunk? In fact you have a case to answer. Where did you get that huge amount ofmoney from?
Passenger: (sobbing & genuflecting) please don't expose me. My boss died this morning. He was a Hausa man who ran a Bureau de Change business. He died after a brief illness. As soon as he died, my colleague made away with one of his vehicles. Because I don't know how to drive, I decided to make away with this money.
Passenger at the Front: How much is in the bag?
Passenger: 1.1 million dollars
Passenger at the Front: Oga driver, you know what? Let's strike a deal with the man. (Facing the Passenger at the backwho at this point is already shaking like a jellyfish) Are you ready to share this money with the rest of us on this car?
Passenger: Yes sir!
All along I was quiet.
Passenger the one who 'stole' the money) We need a herbalist or witch doctor to help us make the charms ineffective because the last time I tried to touch the money, I fell down.
Driver: (Cuts in) that's no problem. We will get a pastor or a herbalist to destroy the charms.
At this point, the passenger asked for my views. To be candid, so many things were on my mind. I felt this could be the 'major break' I had been trusting God for. On the other hand, I wasn't comfortable because if what the passenger said was anything to go by, & I partook in spending the money, I would have murdered Peace & Sleep.
Me: No true pastor will agree to be a part of this.
Before you could say Jack Robinson, the Passenger at the Front quickly offered to phone a herbalist that he claimed to know. Meanwhile the driver had taken the alternative route instead of going through the TollPlaza. As soon as we got to a point, I told the driver to stop, I told him I wasn't interested, & immediately got out of the car & took a long walk.
To cut a long story short, when I got to work, I just hinted my colleague about my experience without going into details & guess what she said! She told metheir modus operandi which tallied with what I experienced today.
So pals in the house, I urge you to always take time to pray before you go out & be close to God. PutGod first in all you do & be security conscious. May you not die untimely in Jesus' name & may God's grace be constantly available to you & your loved ones.

Woman Sleeps With Her Son, Now Pregnant For Him
A woman and her son have done the unthinkable – they have fallen in love with one another. And now they want to marry since the mom, Betty Mbereko is six months pregnant and expecting a child for her son.
“Look, I strove alone to send my son to school and no one helped me. Now you see that my son is working and you accuse me of doing something wrong. Let me enjoy the products of my sweat,” the woman boasted before local authorities.
Mbereko (40), from Mwenezi in Masvingo, who was widowed 12 years ago, has been cohabiting with her first child, Farai Mbereko (23). She confirms that she is six months pregnant and that she has decided it is better to “marry”her son because she does not want to marry her late husband’s young brothers, whom she says are coveting her.
Betty stunned a village court last week when she said the affair with her son had begun three years earlier. She said after spending a lot of money sending Farai to school following the death of her husband, she felt shehad a right to his money and no other woman was entitled to it.
Farai said he was more than prepared to marry his mother andwould pay off the ilobola balance his father had left unpaid to his grandparents. “I know my father died before he finished paying the bride price and I am prepared to pay it off,” he said.
“It is better to publicize what is happening because people shouldknow that I am the one who made my mother pregnant. Otherwise they will accuse her of promiscuity.”
But local headman Nathan Muputirwa says: “We cannot allow this to happen in our village, this is a bad omen indeed. In the past they would have to bekilled but today we cannot do it because we are afraid of the police.” He warned them to break off their marriage or leave the village immediately.
Funny enough, the mother and son chose the advice and have left the village for an unknown destination.
A man is standing trial at Sabo Magistrate's Court, for allegedly beating up his landlord and attacking a policeman, tearing his singlet which the prosecution saidcost N90, 000.
The defendant, Mr. Akinsola Ajayi, 32, was arraigned on five counts of assault and malicious damage.
When the case was called up in court, the prosecution could not read the charge sheet clearly and after several failed attempts, the Magistrate, Mrs. Bola Folarin-Williams, halted the proceeding in anger.
She said, "Who are you reading the charge sheet to? Is it to the court or the accused person? Are you strange to this court? You don't know how to read the charge sheet or what?"
Folarin-Williams subsequently adjourned the case until April 23 and Ajayi was returned to detention.
The charge sheet, which our correspondent obtained, reads in part, "That you, Akinsola Ajayi on the December 5, 2012 at about 10.30pm at 13 Adebolu Street Bariga in the Lagos Magisterial district, did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by unlawfully disorganising the peaceful environment of the Street and throwing out bucket, property of one Ibrahim Olusesi and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 166 (d) of criminal law of Lagos State."

Seven Dead in venezuela vote protests
CARACAS—Violent protests over the outcome of Venezuela's presidential election to replace late president Hugo Chavez have left at least seven dead and 61 injured, the attorney general said Tuesday.
"The most serious thing is that in these violent actions, seven Venezuelans died," said Attorney General Luisa Ortega, adding that 61 were injured. So far, 135 people have been arrested, she said.
Violent protests swept parts of Caracas and other cities around the country Monday night after the National Election Council proclaimed acting President Nicolas Maduro the winner of Sunday's election and rejected opposition demands for a recount.
Venezuela's president-elect Nicolas Maduro and opposition candidate Henrique Capriles blamed each other for the wave of deadly protests.
Accusing "fascists" of the violence, which left at least seven people dead, Maduro said he would not allow the opposition to go ahead with a march through the center of Caracas. Capriles said the government had "ordered" the melee.
5000 Repentant Abia criminals Seek Amnesty
The House of Representatives on Monday said 5,000 repentant Abia criminals have petitioned the National Assembly, complaining of non-extension of amnesty to them.
The House said the youths were those previously involved in criminal acts, including kidnapping, who voluntarily surrendered their arms in 2010 when the state government offered them amnesty.
Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions, Chief Uzor Azubuike, disclosed this on Monday in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, when he led members of his committee to pay courtesy call on Governor Theodore Orji shortly before theybegan to hear the petitions by the youths.
Meanwhile, while the hearing held, most of the Abia youths asking for amnesty besieged streets in Aba in protest.
However, Azubuike said, “We arehere because of petitions by over5000 Abia youths previously involved in criminal acts. They are complaining that they were not included in the Amnesty programme of the Federal Government.”
He said, “If they are not listened to, it has the capacity to engulf the nation into crisis. There is danger of a backslide if the youths abandoned their criminal acts and nothing is done to resettle them. It will be uncanny of the Federal Government to ignore them. The petition is a fallout of your action when you offered the youth amnesty to make them drop crime.”
The chairman commended Abia State governor for fighting crimes in the state and the ability to mange crime in the state, saying that no other government across the country has done as much as the state has done in security matters.
He also commended President Goodluck Jonathan for his youth empowerment programme, which culminated in the amnestyprogramme of the repentant militants.
“So we are here today to listen to those petitions from the youths from this state. Amnesty office has confirmed that they have the petitions. We are here to see how these youths can be captured in the programme,” Azubuike explained.
Receiving the committee members, Governor Orji noted that though Abia is now peaceful, there was once upon a time when it had the problem of kidnapping.
“That time, Abia became the den of kidnappers. Aba became a ghost city. Everybody ran away. Ivisited Abanta’s place [a memberof the committee], there was nobody, they had all fled, I saw only his posters. That was the situation and we fought it. We fought them doggedly.
“We tried amnesty here. They came here and I saw them. They told us their grievances, and we acceded to their complaints and proposed amnesty to them. Theyaccepted and we built camps. They brought their arms. They were in camps and we were planning to settle them. But when they heard that the Federal Government had provided largesse to their colleagues, they abandoned the camps.
“We took their names to the Federal Government but no response. Though they left camp, they promised that they will not make any trouble because we treated them like human beings. They maintained it till their kinpin, Osisikankwu was killed. Please, tell the Federal Government to start where we stopped.”

Don’t impose tax on churches, cleric warns FG
Founder of the Cherubim & Seraphim Success Gate Inc, Akure, Primate Ademisokun Turton, on Saturday warned the Federal Government against imposing taxes on churches in the country because doing so would have adverse effects on the citizenry.
Turton stated this at the inauguration of the newly-elected officers of the Ondo State chapter of the C&S Unification Church executive in Akure, the state capital.
He said, "Nigerian leaders have created enough problems for the citizenry. Imposing taxes on churches would worsen the socio-economic crisis which Nigeria is going through.
"The truth of the matter is that the payment of such tax will be the responsibility of church members thereby creating more trouble for the poor masses.
"The best thing the government at all tiers can do now is to be giving subventions to churches."
Turton noted that the dreaded Boko Haram sect would not stop their attacks in the country until there was a strong indication that a northerner would succeed President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
He said, "I am not surprised that the Boko Haram sect has rejected the amnesty offer from the Federal Government. It is now clear that their agitation is political. What they want is either Nigeria breaks or they rule it.
"It (Boko Haram) is a problem created by the Northern elite. It is the political class in the north that is using the Boko Haram people to foment trouble. The rejection of amnesty showed that they have realised that creating more trouble is the only way they can rule Nigeria.
"If President Jonathan will contest for a second term in office then there cannot be an end to Boko Haram."
