Don’t impose tax on churches, cleric warns FG

Founder of the Cherubim & Seraphim Success Gate Inc, Akure, Primate Ademisokun Turton, on Saturday warned the Federal Government against imposing taxes on churches in the country because doing so would have adverse effects on the citizenry. Turton stated this at the inauguration of the newly-elected officers of the Ondo State chapter of the C&S Unification Church executive in Akure, the state capital. He said, "Nigerian leaders have created enough problems for the citizenry. Imposing taxes on churches would worsen the socio-economic crisis which Nigeria is going through. "The truth of the matter is that the payment of such tax will be the responsibility of church members thereby creating more trouble for the poor masses. "The best thing the government at all tiers can do now is to be giving subventions to churches." Turton noted that the dreaded Boko Haram sect would not stop their attacks in the country until there was a strong indication that a northerner would succeed President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. He said, "I am not surprised that the Boko Haram sect has rejected the amnesty offer from the Federal Government. It is now clear that their agitation is political. What they want is either Nigeria breaks or they rule it. "It (Boko Haram) is a problem created by the Northern elite. It is the political class in the north that is using the Boko Haram people to foment trouble. The rejection of amnesty showed that they have realised that creating more trouble is the only way they can rule Nigeria. "If President Jonathan will contest for a second term in office then there cannot be an end to Boko Haram." Turton recalled that crises had been contributing to the emergence of Nigerian leaders since 1999.

After a meeting of the Technical Committee of the NFF in Abuja, it was decided that all match bonuses as well as the salaries of the coaches, including Keshi should be cut down. When Punch asked the General Secretary of the NFF, Mr. Musa Amadu, why they are reducing the pay of people who recently brought bride to Nigeria, he simply said it's due to the reality on ground. “If you take just a simple look at the period around June and the cost implication for the country, for instance, you will understand that the measures being taken have become very necessary. We cannot continue like this; there has to be sensible auditing,” he said. The committee also deliberated on the war of words between Keshi and his players and promised to address the issues before the team embarks on matches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Namita, a middle-aged woman who lives in India's north-eastern Tripura state and is a government worker, describes Buru, the pet monkey, as her third child. "Yes, I breastfeed him. He is my son," says Namita, caressing the monkey. More than four years ago, her woodcutter husband found a dying baby monkey under a tree after a fierce storm. He brought the animal home in Chandrapur village on the outskirts of the Udaipur town in Tripura's South District. "I did not have a son. God finally gave me one," says Namita, as she continued to breastfeed the monkey. I ask her whether she has been breastfeeding Buru- who is around five years old- for too long. "I will continue to breastfeed him as long as he wants it. He will always remain a little one for me," she says. She says she also feeds her pet monkey "expensive cow milk" which she could not afford for her children. Namita Das has two grown up children, but she continues to suckle her pet monkey.

A man arrested for impregenating two of her daughter, attempting to rape the third

A 58-year-old man from Agbura community, Yenagoa Local Government, Bayelsa State was on Thursday arrested by the police for allegedly impregnating his two daughters. The suspect, whose name was not disclosed, was also said to have attempted to rape his third daughter. Our correspondent gathered that the arrest was initiated by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Mrs. Pulu Zifawei. The matter reportedly got to the office of the special adviser after the suspect made several attempts to rape his younger daughter. The 14-year-old daughter, a student of the Community Secondary School, Agbura, was said to have reported the sexual harassment by her father to the school counsellor during a guardian and counselling session. The school counsellor, who is also the victim's class teacher, reported the case to the Ministry of Women Affairs which alerted the police. The suspect was arrested and detained at the Azikoro Police Station. A community source, Rowland Eview, told our correspondent that investigations by the police revealed that the suspect had already impregnated two of his daughters. One of the daughters, 23, was said to have conceived twice for the father but mysteriously lost the babies at birth. The second pregnant daughter was said to have relocated from the community out of shame. The 21-year-old son of the suspect, who declined to mention his name, said he became aware of his father's shameful acts at the age of 12. "Our mother had reported the matter to the members of the family. On that day, our father nearly beat my mother to death. Each time the issue came up, my father would beat my mother," hesaid. He said the father had also inflicted machete cuts on him and his elder brother for daring to challenge his actions. A senior police officer at the Azikoro Police Station confirmed to our correspondent that the suspect was in detention but said the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, must be contacted for further details. But Akhigbe told our correspondent that he was in a meeting.

I WILL NOT RESIGN,JONATHAN TELLS BOKO HARAM.But President Goodluck Jonathan has faulted the condition given by the Boko Haram that he should embrace the Islamic faith and become its ardent member or resign from office, saying that the sect's demands were blackmail and rude intimidation. Speaking to LEADERSHIP through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the president said he would not resign as president as far as he was in power based on the mandate givento him by Nigerians in the 2011 presidential poll. Abati said it was laughable for any group in the country to hand down such a condition to a president whowas elected by both Muslims and Christians in last year's presidential poll even when it was not in contest that he was a Christian. The presidential spokesman said,"When Nigerians voted overwhelmingly for President Jonathan in the 2011 general election, they knew they were voting for a Christian. He continues to enjoy the goodwill and support of the good people of Nigeria. As president, Dr. Jonathan is the leaderof both Muslims and Christians; in fact he is the leader of persons of all faiths. "So, it amounts to sheer blackmail for any individual or group to ask the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to convert to Islam. The president cannot be intimidated by any group or individual. The President will never resign. He has the mandate of Nigerians to serve his motherland and nobody should imagine that hewill succumb to blackmail."
